What Sort of Education Does a Pastry Chef Need?
You could have all the passion for pastries in the world, but without the right kind of education in pastry making you won't be able to turn your vision into reality. Being a successful chef needs creative flair, but a scientific education is particularly important for the pastry chef — you need it to make sure your mixes are in the right proportions and that you are cooking at the right temperature.

To get the education you need to be a successful pastry chef, look for a baking and pastry program at culinary school, or take a more generalized culinary arts qualification and then specialize in pastry making.

The pastry chef works in restaurants, bistros, large hotels, casinos and bakeries. The pastry kitchen or pastry section is normally slightly separate from the main kitchen. The station chef or pastry chef, in a professional chef kitchen, are highly skilled in making desserts, pastries and many other baked goods. In the pastry kitchen, they often have other assistants to assist them.

Some of the many responsibilities of the pastry chef often include ordering, costing and menu planning. In daily operations, the pastry chef may develop new recipes, test them or research new recipe concepts. Although they do not usually plate their desserts, they prepare them in advance.

Common work activities include:
Meet with the various chefs in the restaurant to discuss menu planning and pairing of desserts with entrée and appetizer selections.

Testing and evaluation of new pastry and dessert recipes.
Ordering all supplies from various vendors and in some cases going directly to the growers for the freshest possible fruits and berries.
Preparing a budget for the pastry department of the kitchen in conjunction with the management and the other chefs.
Supervising the various apprentice and chefs in training in the pastry kitchen.
Providing training, education and even community classes on pastry and dessert making

i am a server and my girlfriend is a pastry chef. we already have a dog that is 2 years old and think he needs a companion but we can’t decide if we have enough time to train and spend with him?

Sorry, you don’t have enough time home thru the week to properly train the dog. 1 lonely dog, and you add a 2nd dog, you don’t have a companion for the first dog, 2 have 2 lonely dogs.

Can an INTP become a chef?

I'm looking for a career change right now, my personality is a true intp…. many books indicate that the compatible career for this type of personality are on the science and analytical field. so do you think becoming a pastry chef is not a good idea?

If you can cook, I don't see why not. There's no reason you have to pigeonhole yourself into whatever the "recommended" professions are. Yes, you should do something you're good at, but it's far more important to do something you enjoy.

i still really want to be one but im too afraid to eat the food i make. any suggestions?

Yes. And you should also get some help for your eating disorder. Talk to your doctor!

I'm 21 and I'm a cook. I graduated from a culinary school. Right now, i work in a restauarant to gain some exp. I would like to continue to keep educated myself becuz learning nevers end. But I wanna ask what other educations can i get to help in my cooking field other than pastry and sugar decoration course. I really enjoy creating new dishes with different kind of flavors and textures by using my own theory. I believe cooking will bring happiness to ppl. I was thinking taking chinese herb medicine. (What other suggestion do u have?) I never intend to open a restuarant and become a executive chef. I look at cooking as more in scientific and formulas.

BTW, i'm also a language lover. I speak English, Chinese, French, Spanish, and a bit of Russian. I think the language can give me that extra boost in my cooking area.

No short answer plz.
thoughtful answer is welcome. Thank you for the advices ^^'

another aspect is to look at agriculture… to see how you could help improve the flavor of things as they are growing.. also with the invention of different foods ( ie the broccoflower)…I also find the best recipes are made by just using your imagination.. like you said use different textures and tastes and eye appeal is a big one.. and have fun with it… eye appeal can also be a scientific formula as well… different shaped plates.. how to stack or arrange the food for best presentation.. with your knowledge in languages… you can use that to enhance your ability to do infusion cooking where you can use some of the foreign recipes and mix them with the western recipes.. there is a whole world of possiblities out there .. I hope you have fun and continue with the idea of cooking brings happiness… I believe the heart of the home is the kitchen… enjoy and bon appetite'
